The Board is a provider of a range of social work/care services:
The Church of Ireland Adoption Society provides social work services to women with an unplanned pregnancy, couples wishing to adopt, adult adoptees seeking access to birth records, and anyone touched by adoption.
The Fertility Counselling Service is linked to the Regional Fertility Centre at the Royal Maternity Hospital, Belfast. This service is for couples coping with the emotional stresses associated with infertility investigations and treatments.
Financial Assistance to Families and Individuals
in Need is a practical form of caring in which financial assistance is provided to people in need referred by clergy
and social work agencies.
In addition the Board is involved in:
·
The provision of
training courses on social issues relevant to the pastoral role of clergy.
· Commenting on social issues and proposed legislation.
The main social work services provided by the Board remain in the fields of Adoption and Fertility Counselling.
The Adoption Society provides a service to complement Statutory Social Services. In 2000 the Society developed close working relationships with a number of agencies – including Chester Diocesan Adoption Services, Cheshire Social Services, The Scottish Adoption Association and The Ulster Community and Hospitals Trust. The Society recognises ‘joint working’ as the way of maintaining present and developing future services.
The Fertility Counselling Service linked to The
Regional Fertility Centre is a unique social work service provision in Northern Ireland. Mrs Patricia Gilbert, Senior Social Work
Practitioner, is a member of the
Executive Committee of The British Infertility Counselling Association.
In 2000 the Board welcomed Mrs Margaret Giff on a sessional social work basis. In part, her arrival helped with increasing demands for services. In addition her work ‘freed up’ time for the professional staff to attend relevant training courses. The courses and the replacement social work hours were generously funded by The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety.
The Board receives funding from a range of sources to meet staff and other operating costs. Sources include:
The General Synod Priorities Fund – Grant Allocation
Parish and Diocesan Donations
The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety – Core Grant Aid
The Regional Fertility Centre – Contract for Services Provided
Health and Social Services Trusts – Fees for Services Provided
Trust Funds – for Specific Work/Projects an example being Hopedene Trust

The death of Miss Helen Miskimmin on 14 December 2000 came as a shock to Board members and staff. Helen was a committed member of the Board who also served on the General Purpose and Finance Committee and she was Chairperson of The Adoption Panel of the Church of Ireland Adoption Society. Helen will be greatly missed by staff, Board members and users of our services.
