“Three Year Trial”

In 1997 the Allocations Committee agreed to fund the Christian Stewardship Organisation to the amount of £50,000 per annum for a three-year period from 1998 to 2000.  The cost to a parish for a Christian Stewardship Development Programme was linked to the aforementioned figures and was set at £2 per family unit.  It was hoped that this financial restructuring would tempt more parishes throughout Ireland to consider and eventually launch Christian Stewardship Parish Development Programmes. During this period 19 programmes were completed.  679 dedicated and enthusiastic Parish Visitors visited a total of 5185 households.

The positive outcomes to these parishes were:

(a)    a tremendous source of lay involvement

(b)   an insatiable appetite for further education in putting their faith into action

(c)    a significant measurable increase in planned giving.

The results of (a) and (b) produce intangible benefits for parishes and these results should not be overlooked in the terms of the contribution made during development programmes.  However, (c) showed an increase in planned financial contributions (including Covenant Tax Rebate) of over £600,000.  Not a bad return on an investment of £150,000!

The Allocations Committee have launched an in-depth review of the Christian Stewardship Organisation as part of this “three year journey”.  An independent Consultant has been engaged to carry out this Review with a wide ranging brief covering (a) how relevant/important is the ‘continued existence’ of the Christian Stewardship Organisation to (b) where does it fit within the ‘Mission Structure’ of the Church of Ireland.  The outcome of this review should be known by late Spring/Early Summer.

However, during the period of the Review, the Christian Stewardship Organisation will continue to expound the Biblical principles of Christian Stewardship and direct those Parish Development Programmes, that have been agreed.
