The General Synod of the Church of Ireland today debated whether to make the Archdeacon of Belfast Precentor of St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast.
The position of Precentor of St Anne’s Cathedral is occupied by the Archdeacon of Connor. However, the Bishop of Connor, the Right Revd Alan Abernethy, as well as his predecessor and the current Archbishop of Armagh, the Most Revd Alan Harper, consider it appropriate for the Archdeacon of Belfast to serve as Precentor.
A Bill was debated on the floor of the Synod to amend the General Synod Act of 1944 to allow for the change.
The Bill passed its first and second readings without any debate.
The position of Archdeacon of Belfast was created in 2007.
