In its recent Mission Questionnaire, the Church of Ireland Council for Mission identified almost 100 parishes with overseas mission links.

The results of the survey were contained in the Council’s report to the Church of Ireland General Synod, delivered today.

Of the 181 parishes that replied, a response rate of approximately 30 per cent, 99 had mission links through mission agencies. 54 parishes had more than one link.

Links with African projects were bay far the most numerous at 85, while Asia featured next with 16.

The Council is hoping to expand and improve its statistical research into Irish-based mission, and submitted a motion to the General Synod to authorise the Council to gather, compile in a standardised form and analyse the already existing information on trends in worship and pastoral offices.

Seconding the motion, Miss Mavis Gibbons (Connor) stated that “the Council believes that such statistics would help us to look with new eyes at our parishes, and to see more clearly where there are ‘holes in the cheese’.”

The motion, which endorses a trial in three contrasting dioceses, was passed unanimously by the General Synod.
