General Synod 2009

Printable versionConfirmation and Clergy Family Life dominate Youth and Marriage Reports

In a motion to discuss a proposal for the Church of Ireland Youth Department to establish a working group to study the role of Confirmation in the faith development of young people, the Archbishop of Dublin said, 'Too many young people are taking confirmation before they are ready to do so.'

The Bishop of Cashel and Ossory, added 'Since I became a bishop, I have become convinced that we cannot look at confirmation profitably unless we cease to regard it as the gateway to communion.'

The Motion, which was proposed by Bishop Alan Abernethy and seconded by Rev Robert Miller, was duly passed by Synod.

The Church of Ireland Marriage Council, also proposed a motion in the names of Rev Brian Harper and Rev John McDowell, asking the General Synod take seriously the impact of ministry on clergy marriages and family life and encouraging the Marriage Council to develop methods of support.

The Bishop of Cashel and Ossory raised concerned about the wording of the proposal and asked that an amendment be adopted highlighting the positive aspects of clerical housing.

The amended resolution was passed by Synod.
