Printable versionCall for Christian Unity to be 'Firmly Grounded'

Presenting the report of the Commission for Christian Unity and Dialogue the Bishop of Meath and Kildare said that ecumenical dialogue “can become detached from the life of the Church if it is not firmly grounded. We have talked about our wasteful use of resources, even at the most basic level....we need to co-operate as far as we can with other Christian traditions. We also need to look at dialogue with those of other faiths. We hope to run a conference in a few months time to look at this area of work. We cannot do mission without the pursuit of unity.”

He encouraged people to avoid the term ‘unity in diversity’ which he said, while a useful term “can often be a cop out. Christ never said ‘may they all be united in diversity’ he said “may they all be one.”

The report was approved and the resolution also saw the appointment of several members of the commission. The members elected were the Archbishops and Bishops, the Revd Canon Patrick Comerford, the Revd Canon David Crooks, the Revd Canon Ian Ellis, Mr Sam Harper, the Revd IJE Knox, the Revd Darren McCallig, the Revd John McDowell, Mrs R McKelvey, Dr Ken Milne, Mr WT Morrow, the Revd Daniel Nuzum and Ms CS Turner.
