General Synod 2010

Printable versionDebate on Board of Social Responsibility (Republic of Ireland)

There was no report from the Board of Social Responsibility (Republic of Ireland) but the Synod discussed the Board’s work. The Revd Canon David Catterall (Elphin and  Ardagh) said that the Board’s sole activity over the year was the establishment of the new Board for Social Theology in Action. He praised the contribution of Miss Vivienne Darling to the Church and Society. Mr Peter Reid (Killaloe) said he was extremely pleased that there was a coalescing of ideas having earlier expressed disappointment that the Board’s reports were traditionally discussed on the last day of the Synod. “There is a great need for the Church to develop and work in the area of social conscience” he said. Arthur Vincent (Dublin) noted the contribution of Protestant Aid since 1836. He said that the charity anticipates “receiving a lot more requests for assistance this year, including from young married couples in danger of losing houses, others who can’t afford to keep their children in secondary schools.” He said they were appealing to everybody who could give “something extra” to Protestant Aid.
