Printable versionSupport for Youth Ministry Encouraged in CIYD Report

The report of the Church of Ireland Youth Department to Synod focused on CIYD’s goal to see young people become disciples.

Proposing the report of CIYD, Andrew Brannigan said that this was not an easy task as Church was no longer at the centre of many communities and in the face of aggressive secularism. “But yet, they are more than ready to hear about Jesus Christ. They are more than ready to give him their life and take those faltering steps into discipleship,” he stated.

Outlining the work of CIYD he said the organisation had limited resources – two Development Officers for the whole island. They work closely with dioceses to help fund their youth ministry, advise on staffing and other issues and help them with diocesan programmes. They organise area wide training and events to grow new leaders and improve older ones. They liaise with government agencies and others to ensure continued funding and policy developments that protect and enhance youth ministry.

Alan Williamson seconded the report. He highlighted the level of volunteerism in youth programmes throughout Ireland. The leadership and development of leaders was also highlighted. He said it was encouraging to see the focus in many dioceses in developing leaders.

Points raised during discussion on the report included:
• The Bishop of Meath, president of CIYD, said that all the members of executive and central board give of their time and energy and thanked the staff and the executive. But she also thanked the volunteers throughout the country. She thanked the RB for their support and advice. “Young people are not the church of tomorrow, they are the church of today,” she said.
• Synod was encouraged to support youth ministry in their area and the work of CIYD was praised.
• CIYD was thanked for their input into Summer Madness and Anois.
• Pastor Matthew Agboola, a guest at Synod, shared his encouragement.
• CIYD was thanked for providing resources.

The report was received by Synod.
