Buildings tells Church to sort out redundant properties
Proposing the report of the Church of Ireland’s Commission
on Church Buildings, the Very Rev Thomas Moore (Clogher) urged
the Representative Body to sort out a range of problems associated
with unused church buildings.
He warned that the current remit of the Commission was too narrow
and ignored issues associated with graveyards.
“I would ask the RCB and the Committee to widen their remit
or give some serious thought to the increasing problem that could
in itself become a hazard and a danger just as serious as an old
church building that has been left to decay and fall down of its
own accord,” he told the Synod.
Dean Moore urged parishes with redundant walled structures to
approach the Commission for assistance and to sort out any problems
before they become a “millstone”.
