PRESS RELEASE

11 May 2004

“TRADITIONS OF FAITHFULNESS” CHART CHRISTIAN VISION

There is continuing dialogue between the churches in Ireland with the prospect of a deepening sense of togetherness in Christ.

Rt Revd Peter Barrett, Bishop of Cashel and OssorySpeaking today at the General Synod in Armagh on the work of the Church of Ireland’s Committee for Christian Unity, Rt Revd Peter Barrett, Bishop of Cashel and Ossory, said: “The witness to deepening our togetherness in Christ across the ‘Traditions of Faithfulness’ continues apace in Ireland, not least in relation to Anglican/Methodist dialogue. We await with much interest the ongoing deliberations of the Covenant Council on matters of faith and order, as it continues to chart a course towards a new appraisal of divergent moorings.”

Bishop Barrett also expressed the hope that dialogue with the Presbyterian Church on matters of mutual concern will be refreshed in the near future.

And in acknowledging the significance of the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, the third longest in recorded papal history, Bishop Barrett expressed good wishes to Archbishop Diarmuid Martin in his new post as Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin and to Cardinal Desmond Connell on his retirement.

The Bishop went on to stress the importance of European and international dialogues in strengthening the Church’s perceptions of mission and unity.
