CHURCH COMMUNICATORS WIN ‘OSCARS’

The Church of Ireland today acknowledged the tremendous contribution made by magazine editors and website managers in the development of church communications in its 1100 parishes and 12 dioceses and in the wider community.

Winners of the Parish Website competition from St Maelruains Parish (Tallaght) - Willie Walsh, Rev William Deverell and Jane Thompson with the Archbishops of Dublin and ArmaghAt the General Synod in Armagh, Archbishop Robin Eames presented the Church’s ‘Oscars’ for best parish magazine, best diocesan magazine, best parish website, best cathedral website and best diocesan website.

Archbishop Eames said: “The standard of presentation and expertise across all these media is excellent. I congratulate the winners and acknowledge the tremendous work that is done by editors, distributors and contributors in making communications more effective in parishes and dioceses.”

Hilary McClay (Diocesan Magazine competition winner for Think Again News), Dean Cassidy of Armagh, Mary Coles (Diocesan Website competition winner, Down and Dromore), the Archbishop of Dublin and the Archbishop of ArmaghThe Annual Magazine and Website Competition judges this year were: Rev Dr Bert Tosh, BBC (NI); Mrs Rosalind Rogers, Head of the School of Communications UUJ, Mr Rodney Miller, Chartered Designer, and Mr Jonathan Martin, Managing Director, J Martin Associates.

Rev Dr Bert Tosh, Head of Religious Broadcasting, BBC (NI), said: “The challenges facing editors who faithfully produce magazines and websites are acute. They are to be commended for making the effort with such dedication. However in many magazines more attention should be given to design and lay out to make these more user friendly. Such changes do not need to be drastic or expensive!”

(l to r) - Winners of the Parish Magazine competition for All Saints Newsletter (Raheny) - Billy Lindsay, Conor O'Leary, John Storey and Sheila Fowler with the Archbishops of Dublin and ArmaghThe leading website judge, Mr Jonathan Martin, Managing Director of J Martin Associates, said: “It was good to see so many websites promoting the work of the Church of Ireland. The quality was very high which made the scoring difficult but challenging. I am encouraged by the work done to date and would recommend that parishes without a site should consider developing one. It isn’t as difficult as you would imagine, why not give it a try.”
