Proposed Amendments To Liturgical Bills 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 9 and 13

The following amendments to the Liturgical Resolutions of 2002 were received by the Honorary Secretaries within one month of last year's meeting of the Synod, in accordance with Standing Order 30(a), and will be considered this year as amendments to the Schedules of the Liturgical Bills.

    Delete “daily” and add “of to-morrow” in order that the line now reads

  1. In Gloria in Excelsis in line 2 for the word “God’s” there shall be substituted the word “his”.

  2. That in the service: The Ordination of Bishops the rubric following the Blessing “the newly-consecrated bishop stands before the archbishop” be deleted.
     
  3. That in the service: The Ordination of Bishops the section:
    “The archbishop gives the staff to the new bishop, saying:
    Keep watch over the flock of which the Holy Spirit has appointed you shepherd.
    Encourage the faithful, restore the lost, build up the body of Christ;
    That when the Chief Shepherd shall appear, you may receive the unfading crown of glory.”

    Be removed from after the blessing and placed instead immediately following the section:

LITURGICAL BILL NO 13 - Proposed Amendments

IN THE NAMES OF LADY SHEIL AND REV CANON RB ROUNTREE

  1. That on Page 2 - in section IV referring to the STATUTE of the General Synod of the Church of Ireland Chapter II of 2001 (concerning Holy Communion in contemporary language) the paragraph numbered (iii) “in APPENDIX B” to “the faith” be deleted.
     
  2. On page 7 - under the heading Sundays that in the line beginning “The First Sunday of Epiphany ….” the words “our Lord” be substituted for the word “Christ”.
     
  3. On page 7 - That the lines from the line beginning “for “Between 7-12 January……”” to the line ending with the words “27 January” be deleted.
     
  4. That after the section headed “IV” a new section be added and numbered.

    “V. STATUTE of the General Synod of the Church of Ireland Chapter x of 2001, concerning the Calendar.”
     
  5. In the section headed “The Seasons” after the words “From the Epiphany to the Presentation of Christ” the words “a weekday, and” and the words “is the Second Sunday of Epiphany” be deleted. [The sentence to read: “When 6 January is a Sunday the Festival of the Baptism of our Lord is observed on 13 January.”]
     
  6. In the section headed “Ordinary Time” the following sentence be added after the words “before Advent”. “On the very rare occasion that there are 23 Sundays between Trinity Sunday and the Fifth Sunday before Advent, the Collect and Post Communion of the Third Sunday before Lent are used on the Twenty-third Sunday after Trinity.”
     
  7. In the Schedule pages 6, 7 and 8:
    That the titles of the Sundays, “First, Second, Third and Fourth Sundays of the Epiphany”, be renamed “First, Second, Third and Fourth Sundays after the Epiphany”; and a note “(This Sunday is omitted if 6 January is a Sunday.)” be added after the renamed Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany.

IN THE NAMES OF LADY SHEIL AND REV CANON RB ROUNTREE

AMENDMENT to STATUTES OF GENERAL SYNOD 2002 chapter VIII concerning the service of HOLY BAPTISM

  1. That in the “NOTES” the following words be added:

"2 Where italicized plural pronouns adjectives and verbs are used these should be altered where necessary to the appropriate singular form.

3 THE ADMINISTRATION OF BAPTISM. A threefold administration of water, whether by dipping or pouring, is a very ancient practice of the Church. A single administration is lawful and valid.

4 CONDITIONAL BAPTISM. If it is not certain that a person was baptized with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, then the usual service of baptism is used, but the form of the words at the baptism shall be … , if you have not already been baptized I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

5 EMERGENCY BAPTISM. In a case of urgent necessity it is sufficient to name the candidate and pour water on the person’s head, saying, … , I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Suitable prayers and the Lord’s Prayer should be said."

    IRELAND Chapter V of 2002
    In the prayers in “The Funeral Service for a Child”
    For the prayer entitled “FOLLOWING A MISCARRIAGE OR
    STILL BIRTH” the following prayer be substituted:

    “Compassionate God,
    you alone can heal broken hearts and wipe away every tear.
    We believe that you make nothing in vain:
    nothing and no one is beyond your love and care.
    Be with those whose time of joy has been turned to sadness,
    that together we may be enfolded in your love, now and for all
    eternity in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

    “In these tables a number of readings from the non-canonical books (commonly called the Apocrypha) are provided as first readings. These are chosen for ‘example of life and manners’ [Article 6]. For each of such readings an alternative reading from the Canonical Books is always provided.”
